To promote a flexible workforce, the University will consider applications from individuals seeking full time, part time, job share, or term time only working arrangements.
The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) is a world class research, enterprise and education centre at Aberystwyth University.
We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and motivated field technician with knowledge of grassland-based livestock systems to join a BBSRC-funded Core Strategic Programme on ‘Grassland and crops for challenging environments’. Activities will centre on a related research platform created across sites at Pwllpeiran and Trawscoed.
Examples of related experiments will include those seeking to understand the impact of grazing and cutting on mixed sward stability, elucidating the dynamics of sown sward succession, and identifying the genetic components of population performance in grass/clover mixtures across environments. The post-holder will be responsible for implementing related management and sampling protocols in the field using a variety of equipment including lawnmowers and Haldrup harvesters, as well as ATV and tractor mounted machinery. They will be required to handle livestock regularly, adding and removing sheep to maintain target sward surface heights (which may involve transportation between sites) and carrying out routine stock husbandry (e.g. drenching, treating lameness). They will be required to collect samples of soil, different plant species and sheep faeces throughout the growing season according to detailed sampling schedules, and dry and process these in preparation for subsequent analysis.
The post-holder will be based at IBERS’ Pwllpeiran Upland Research Centre and work alongside two others (a Band 5 and Band 6) as part of a small project team working across the Pwllpeiran and Trawscoed sites, plus they will regularly interact and liaise with initiators and support staff working on the same Core Strategic Programme based at Gogerddan. At the same time, given the distance between the experimental sites, the successful candidate will possess sufficient expertise to work independently; prioritising tasks and making informed decisions regarding stock management to achieve the necessary experimental treatments.
