Assistant Archaeological Adviser (GLAAS)

Job Description

This is a rare opportunity to join the archaeological advisory service at the heart of the development process in our dynamic capital.

The Greater London Archaeology Advisory Service (GLAAS) is part of Historic England`s London Office and a Chartered Institute for Archaeologists` (CIfA) Registered Organisation. Working with partners, developers, archaeologists, and London boroughs, we promote understanding and enjoyment of our archaeological heritage through its protection, management and interpretation. We maintain the Greater London Historic Environment Record and provide advice equivalent to the services provided by local government archaeological officers outside the capital.

London is currently experiencing high levels of major infrastructure development in addition to the usual commercial development projects. To support our senior advisers through this busy period we wish to recruit an Assistant Archaeological Adviser to assess planning applications, and provide advice on evaluation and mitigation measures.

We are looking for a highly motivated person with a sound knowledge and experience of English archaeology, a structured approach to decision-making, good communication skills, and an interest in how archaeology can be positively managed through the planning system.

Our team is continuously developing practice, offers excellent professional development opportunities and works closely with other teams in Historic England and the wider historic environment sector.

The post is fixed term until 31st March 2019 with a possibility of extension subject to business need and resources.
