Overview

 

The University of Sheffield is embarking on an ambitious journey to open a new MPharm degree from October 2025. Based in the School of Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Midwifery ( https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ahpnm ) you will join a vibrant community of researchers and teachers, within the School and across the Faculty of Health, building the programme and the discipline of Pharmacy.

 

As a GPhC registered technician  you will design and deliver teaching across the Pharmacy Practice area, contribute to the assessment of students through OSCEs  and Clinical Skills sessions and manage the day to day running of the Dispensary area and Consultation rooms.

Candidates for this post should demonstrate their experience in Pharmacy Technician education and training or delivery of MPharm degree programmes and their commitment to professional development within their role.   A commitment to fresh thinking, flexibility and adaptability in approach are essential to this role.

Main duties and responsibilities

 

  • Work with the Head of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Practice team,  to design and deliver Practice and Clinical Teaching within the  MPharm programme ensuring that it is accessible, inclusive and contributes to the University's Teaching and Learning Strategy.
  • Develop and review assessments in relation to the practice of pharmacy and be involved in associated quality assurance, delivery, marking and feedback.
  • Support individual MPharm students in the role as professional mentor and academic tutor.
  • Improve and enhance the student experience and student outcomes through programme delivery based on a detailed understanding of student needs and professional requirements.
  • Behave ethically in all aspects of your role  and act as a role-model for  MPharm students.
  • Manage the day-to-day running of the School pharmacy dispensary and consultation area including preparation of teaching and equipment.
  •  Arrange for the purchase/procurement and safe storage and administration of pharmacy supplies, including medicinal products and  prepare costings and liaise with relevant senior colleagues for replacement of equipment /supplies or procurement of new equipment /supplies.
  • Manage own technical and administrative activities, with guidance from colleagues if required.
  • Participate in School admissions and outreach activities which may involve activities outside of standard working hours, for example Open days.
  • Work according to University quality assurance processes and other regulatory frameworks including Professional Regulatory bodies e.g. GPhC.
  • Actively contribute to the collective interests and values of the University through individual

action and inclusive, collaborative working.

  • Make a full and active contribution to the principles of the Sheffield Academic'. These include the achievement of excellence in applied teaching and research, and scholarly pursuits to make a genuine difference in the subject area and to the University's achievements as a whole.

Essential criteria

  • Current registration as a technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (assessed at application)
  • Experience of teaching pharmacy technicians, pharmacy students or foundation year pharmacy trainees (assessed at application and interview)
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and written (assessed at application and interview)
  • Effective IT skills including the use of Excel spreadsheets (assessed at application and interview)
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues and students (assessed at application and interview)
  • Ability to work autonomously (assessed at application and interview)
  • Relevant current practice as a Pharmacy Technician in a patient-centred role (assessed at application and interview)

 

 

Desirable criteria (max 2)

  • Teaching qualification e.g. FHEA, PGCert Higher Education  (assessed at application)
  • Willingness to undertake additional training / education related to role  (assessed at application and interview)
