Front End Developer

Job Description

We are seeking a Front-end Developer with an eye for detail and a passion for crafting responsive web applications using modern standards to join our team here at Historic England. We are looking for a dependable and motivated front-end developer to join our agile scrum team delivering secure, dependable code which does the best possible job, on time and on budget.

We love coding, optimising and problem solving and want to work with people who feel the same! In return we offer a dedicated training day every sprint, flexible hybrid working and the chance to shape the website of a major national organisation.

If you`d like to help people from all backgrounds across England learn about the rich and diverse history & heritage we have in our country, and how they can get involved, then this could be the role for you.

What you will be doing

You will be responsible for implementing all front-end interfaces; from the main design layout, to managing media, applying different types of typography and font families, implementing animations, the flow of different pages, form interfaces, and more. You will ensure the website meets our mobile first, responsive design principles.

You will act as connective tissue for designers and back-end developers, helping to avoid breakdowns in moving from design to implementation. Use your understanding of the principles of both design and back-end development to help provide that connection, aiding communication through the design and development process.

What we are looking for

  • Prior experience of working in a web development role
  • Possess a portfolio of demonstrable front-end development, via a GitHub profile for example
  • An expert user of CSS and HTML, Bootstrap in particular
  • An expert user of JavaScript, in particular ES6
  • Knowledge of pre-processors, development frameworks and accessibility standards
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Experience of working in an Agile environment, preferably Scrum

Please make clear reference to the key essential skills in the advert when you are completing your application and highlight examples of any related knowledge, skills and experienced based on these.

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance.

Why work for Historic England

We offer a wide benefits package including a competitive pension scheme starting at 21% contributions, a generous 28 days holiday, corporate discounts, free entry into English Heritage sites across the county and development opportunities to ensure you achieve your goals.

We are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for everyone. Diversity helps us to perform better and attract more people to support our work. We welcome and encourage job applications from people of all backgrounds.
