Overview

 

The University of Sheffield's AMRC Castings Group specialises in developing the castings industry, in a wide variety of alloys using sand, investment and permanent mould technologies. The AMRC's Castings team are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join as a Maintenance Engineer.

 

The Maintenance Engineer will operate as part of a small team of engineers that are responsible for maintaining equipment and ensuring compliance with regulations like PUWER and LOLER.

 

A key aspect of this role will be working with melting and heat treatment furnaces, both air and vacuum. As part of this role you may be required to undertake lone working, working in confined spaces and working at heights.

 

As a member of the AMRC Castings team, your role will encompass operational and administrative tasks. This includes activities like purchasing, quality system maintenance, and record keeping, as per the group's requirements.

Main duties and responsibilities

 

The role is likely to involve all aspects of the process including, but not limited to:

  • Perform the maintenance activities within the facility, including but not limited to:
    • Breakdowns and Troubleshooting
    • Conducting preventative maintenance
    • Liaising with equipment suppliers and contractors
    • Overseeing suppliers and contractors on site
    • Identifying and sourcing of spare parts
    • Utilising and inputting into an appropriate CMMS system
  • Provide oversight of the AMRC Castings facilities, ensuring relevant internal and external bodies (including compliance) are kept up to date, including:
    • Fire and Emergency Evacuation. fire safety and testing
    • Accident, incidents & Near Misses
    • Lifting Equipment and Operations
    • Statutory Inspection & Testing
    • Contractor Management
    • Housekeeping Standards
    • Security of site and buildings
  • Ensure maintenance of all equipment in line with legal requirements and compliance, including:
    • Molten Metal Safety
    • Gas Cylinders
    • Electrical Safety
    • LOLER Inspection
    • Pressure and LEV inspections
  • Ensure relevant assessments and training are undertaken in line with requirements, including:
    • Risk Assessment
    • COSHH Assessment
    • Manual Handling
    • Safe use of general hand tools
  • Provide technical assistance for new projects
  • Participate in an on call out of hours rota system once you are deemed competent (paid in addition to salary detailed)
  • Uphold a high standard of Health & Safety to maintain the cleanliness and safety of the shop floor.

Essential criteria

  • Industry recognized apprenticeship, preferably Electrically biased. Must have a working understanding, plus confidence, in Electrical, Control (PLC / HMI), Mechanical, Pneumatic and Hydraulic systems [Application / Interview]
  • Significant experience as a Maintenance Engineer or Technician in a manufacturing industry [Application / Interview]
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety (H&S) procedures within a manufacturing environment [Application / Interview]
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant compliance requirements in industry in line with British and International specifications (i.e. LOLER, PUWER, etc). Working with the maintenance team to help in the management of compliance activities [Application / Interview]
  • Work with the wider maintenance team in the support of repairing equipment on site yet also be comfortable working alone [Interview]
  • Conduct or work with external suppliers for specific preventative or scheduled maintenance of equipment on site [Interview]
  • Maintain up to date records and documentation in relation to equipment, using the necessary IT systems required to conduct this activity [Interview]
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Good attention for detail [Interview]
  • Experience with CMMS systems [Interview]

 

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working with both air and vacuum melting furnaces [Interview]
  • Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan, progress and follow up work activities and liaising with suppliers and the central university estates and facilities management team [Interview]
