Job Description

Design at University of Plymouth is a vibrant Area of study in the School of Art, Design and Architecture, containing UG programmes in 3D Design (Product, Maker, Spatial), Digital Media Design (Internet Design, Game Arts), Graphic Communication (Typography, Branding, Editorial), Illustration and Publishing. There are also PGT programmes in Design, Publishing and Digital Art/Technology.

A School strategy is to develop the PGR capability in the area, which has an exisiting structure of research groupings including Design Knowledge, i-DAT and Message where sharing of research ideas and practice is actively supported.

The School is developing exciting new inter-faculty technical resources, programmes and expertise in the areas of Digital Fabrication and Immersive Visualisation. These will be key areas of research and PGR activity for Design offering many opportunities, particularly in light of the Government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.

We are seeking a Professor with a world-class research profile who can coordinate, develop and expand high quality research related activity across the area. You will need to build the profile and scale of MRes/ResM and PhD provision and help develop strategies for established researchers. The ability to lead and support a dynamic ECR culture is essential and the role will set standards for staff aspiring to Associate Professor/Professor roles. You would be expected to significantly extend research profile overall, particularly with a view to upcoming REF, creating significant changes for subsequent REF cycles.

You should evidence a sustained record of successful PhD supervision as Director of Studies as well as other research mentorship activities.

Evidence of high quality academic research, design practice and an ability to secure external grant funding and successful research partnerships is essential. You will bring appropriate and significant research outputs for submission to REF 2021 and will be expected to mentor staff in the lead up to this, to create a strong Design submission. You would ideally be in place for September 2018 to enable a clear research strategy moving into 2018/19 and beyond.

A PhD in a relevant discipline is essential. We welcome applications from any Design related discipline, but the role requires empathetic understanding of a broad range of subjects and the ability to connect with colleagues and projects elsewhere in the School/Faculty.

Working closely with the Head of School, academics and research leads, you may also participate in PGT/PGR curriculum development and course management as required. This includes teaching/lecturing, maintaining quality of delivery and ensuring the University is at the forefront of research, teaching, practice and innovation. This role requires continued development, ensuring innovations in practice/research are adopted and methods of learning and delivery are continuously developed.
