Research Associate in Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines

Job Description

Are you looking for a research opportunity in one of the top academic Electrical Machines and Power (EMP) Research Groups in the world?
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our team of leading academics, working with a global industry leading partner on control of permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) in the EMP Research Group at the University of Sheffield.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
● Development of control strategies of PMSMs, including sensorless control, parameter estimation, torque control, etc.
● System performance simulation modelling and experimental implementation
● Both theoretical and experimental investigations
● Liaise with engineers from the industrial partner on the implementation of developed control strategies for PMSMs used in their products
This is an excellent opportunity to undertake high quality research in collaboration with a global hi-tech industrial partner. The post holder will be expected to participate in technical meetings, direct communications with the industrial sponsor, and be encouraged and supported to attend international conferences and to publish research findings in learned society journals.
The Electrical Machines and Power (EMP) Group, based in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is a world leader in the field of electrical machines, power electronics, controls, and energy conversion and storage systems. Currently, we have more than 120 personnel, including 16 academic staff (11 full professors), around 100 Research Associates and PhD students. With an outstanding track record for innovation, and for promoting the commercial exploitation of our research findings, the group is particularly well-known for groundbreaking research on permanent magnet machines and drives for applications ranging from automotive, aerospace, renewable energy, marine, industrial, to consumer product sectors. The group has helped to achieve many alignments in terms of the demand for higher power densities, increased energy efficiency, improved reliability and reduced maintenance, and greater functionality.
A clear indication of the expertise and research and design strength of the EMP Group is that we host 7 industrially funded research centres, including Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Advanced Electrical Machines and Sheffield Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Research Centre, as well as 3 spin-out companies. We also host three UK government funded research hubs, including the £28M EPSRC Future Electrical Machines Manufacturing Hub (https://electricalmachineshub.ac.uk).
Benefits include:

• 41 days annual leave (including closure days and Bank Holidays), with the possibility to purchase up to ten additional days.
• Up to 5 days of paid time off to cover emergency caring responsibilities.
• A highly competitive pension scheme.
