Overview

 

We have an opportunity for a senior clinical academic in Paediatric Dentistry to join our team in the School of Clinical Dentistry. In this role you will make a key contribution to the School's research and teaching ambitions and join a team committed to improving oral health.  Clinical activities will include the management of children requiring specialist paediatric care, including multidisciplinary care of those with complex dental and medical needs.

 

We may appoint at Senior Clinical Lecturer (SCL) or Senior Clinical Teacher (SCT) depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant.

 

For appointment as a Senior Clinical Lecturer, you will have a strong track record of research and will be given encouragement and support to develop your research within one of the research groups in the School. You will have a PhD or equivalent, a track record of research with high quality publications, grant income and evidence of independence as a researcher.  At SCT level, the primary responsibility of the appointee will be to take a leadership role in the delivery of paediatric dentistry teaching and learning to dental students and the whole dental team.  In addition, the SCL will be expected play a key role in the School's world-leading research programme.

 

For appointment as a Senior Clinical Teacher, you will have significant experience and expertise in learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.  You will have a strong track record of innovation, development and delivery of learning and teaching including curriculum development and leadership.  You will have a higher degree and evidence of scholarship.

 

You will be clinically qualified and will have completed your specialist training and be on the Paediatric Dentistry specialist list of the General Dental Council.

 

 

Main duties and responsibilities

 

  • Provide leadership and management, both within the Academic Unit of Oral Health, Dentistry & Society and at a wider level within the School of Clinical Dentistry.
  • Contribute to all aspects of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching of dentistry within the School of Clinical Dentistry. This would include academic tutoring, assessment, staff development and scholarly activities.
  • Contribute to enhancing the research activity of the School of Clinical Dentistry with grant applications, publications and active contribution to on-going and relevant research. Provide high-quality postgraduate research student supervision (for SCL).
  • Show academic, clinical and administrative leadership in the Unit and School wide activities.
  • Participate in leadership and development of teaching in Paediatric Dentistry for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Participate in CPD and attend appropriate continuing education courses.
  • Provide an exemplary ethical standard and role model for students at all levels.
  • Take part in all aspects of clinical governance activities in the Directorate and participate in appraisal and postgraduate clinical activities.
  • Participate in the supervision of trainees (StRs and DCTs) in Paediatric Dentistry.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and others, in working towards the enhancement of clinical services for patients.
  • Provide patient services in the Department of Paediatric Dentistry, CCDS, at Sheffield Children's Hospital and Wheata Place Outreach Clinic.  Clinical duties will take place on Wednesday and Friday.  This will include student teaching (alternate Wednesday AM, Friday PM), treatment under general anaesthesia (alternate Wednesday PM), treatment clinics (alternate Wednesday AM/PM) and new patient clinics (Friday AM).  Admin time will coincide with clinical activity. The University of Sheffield will share the commitment to provide the post holder with 1.5 SPA by providing 0.5 of the SPA generic, reflecting the commitment of the School of Clinical Dentistry to working with CCDS to the advantage of both organisations. This 1.5 SPA includes the additional 0.5 SPA for development of the role in the first year.

  • Provide Consultant level duties which may include leading or developing patient services in your area of specialty, undertaking all appropriate Consultant level administration, such as grading referral letters, and participating in the NHS appraisal system.
  • Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post

Essential criteria

 

  • Full registration as a dentist with the GDC - Application
  • BDS degree or equivalent - Application
  • Completion of a higher specialist training programme or equivalent (for honorary consultant status) - Application
  • MFDS or equivalent - Application
  • Postgraduate or Higher degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent/postgraduate research qualification) or close to award - Application
  • Extensive clinical experience in the provision of specialist care in paediatric dentistry in a secondary care hospital setting - Application/Interview
  • Experience of high-quality teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level - Application/Interview
  • Experience and skills in information technology and blended learning technique - Application
  • Postgraduate teaching qualification - Application/Interview
  • Experience of formal/informal mentoring and supervision of UG and/or PG students and staff (Essential for a Senior Clinical Lecturer post) - Application/Interview
  • Research grant income and evidence of independence as a researcher
