Co-op CEO Warns Against Reversing Diversity Policies

The CEO of the Co-op, Shirine Khoury-Haq, has warned that reversing diversity initiatives in the UK could undo decades of progress, especially as multinational corporations like Amazon, Disney, Google, and Meta backtrack on their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies under the Trump administration. The growing trend of rolling back DEI efforts has also been observed in the UK, with companies like BT scaling back DEI initiatives tied to executive bonuses, despite publicly affirming their commitment to these principles.

Shirine Khoury-Haq emphasised that diversity, equity, and inclusion are integral to the organisation’s founding principles and that any reversal of these policies could have profound consequences. These changes are particularly concerning, given that DEI efforts are seen by many as essential for fostering inclusive work environments, which reflect a broader societal push for equality. The CEO further argued that maintaining DEI commitments is crucial for the long-term sustainability of businesses, as these values not only contribute to a positive corporate culture but also drive innovation and growth.

Officials and experts have raised alarms about the potential negative impact of weakening DEI policies. Some have suggested that a strategic combination of DEI with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles could help businesses maintain a commitment to diversity while avoiding the political controversies surrounding these initiatives. Seema Malhotra, the Minister for Equality, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
