Roger Morton, Director of Business Change at NHBC, has today welcomed the Government’s £625 million investment in construction and housebuilding skills, as outlined in the recent Spring Statement. Morton stressed that this funding is not only a critical step towards addressing the UK’s housing crisis but also an exciting opportunity to support recruitment and career growth in the housebuilding sector.

“This investment is a pivotal moment for the construction industry,” said Morton. “It’s not just about building homes—it’s about building long-term careers for people at all stages of their professional lives. From school leavers to career changers, and those returning to work, this investment offers a chance for everyone to gain meaningful, sustainable employment in an industry that’s vital to the future of the UK.”

NHBC, in response to the Government’s initiative, is committing £100 million to its own national training programme. This programme will see the introduction of 12 new multi-skill training hubs across the UK. These hubs will offer hands-on, on-site learning opportunities and provide high-quality apprenticeships in key trades such as bricklaying, groundwork, and site carpentry.

“We’re opening the door to career-changing opportunities for people across the UK,” Morton explained. “Our £100 million investment in these training hubs not only supports the growth of the sector but also provides individuals with the skills and confidence to thrive in housebuilding. Whether you’re starting a career or making a career change, there’s no better time to enter this rewarding sector.”

The Government’s £625 million investment in skills development aligns with NHBC’s commitment to providing the next generation—and those re-entering the workforce—with the training they need to succeed. Morton highlighted that housebuilding is a dynamic sector that requires a wide range of skills, and the Government’s investment represents an opportunity for the industry to tap into new talent and recruit skilled workers for the future.

“Housebuilding is a sector that can offer job security, career progression, and opportunities for everyone,” Morton said. “With the right training and support, individuals can build rewarding, long-term careers in a sector that is essential to the growth of the UK.”

In addition to training and skills development, Morton expressed strong support for the Government’s £2 billion investment in social and affordable housing, which is expected to create thousands of new jobs in construction. “This investment in affordable housing is a critical step towards meeting the housing needs of the UK, while also providing job security for families and career opportunities for jobseekers in construction.”

NHBC continues to play a central role in maintaining high industry standards, ensuring that homes are built to the highest quality. Morton concluded, “Our commitment to upholding the highest construction standards remains unwavering. By investing in the future workforce and creating opportunities for skilled individuals, we will continue to raise the standards of housebuilding and ensure that the homes built today are of the highest quality for future generations.”
