Northern Railway is launching an ambitious recruitment campaign aimed at filling dozens of engineering roles across its train maintenance centres in the North of England. The train operator is seeking skilled engineers to join its workforce, with vacancies at depots in Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester, offering competitive salaries of up to £50,320.
The recruitment drive comes as Northern seeks to expand its team of engineers who play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the company’s fleet of more than 340 trains. These trains are responsible for transporting millions of passengers across the North every year, and engineers are tasked with ensuring they operate smoothly and safely.
In Greater Manchester, Northern is looking to hire maintenance engineers at the Newton Heath TrainCare Centre, offering a starting salary of £49,681 per year. Meanwhile, the Allerton TrainCare Centre in Merseyside is also recruiting engineers, with salaries starting at £37,740 and increasing to £50,320 after completion of a training course.
In West Yorkshire, the company is seeking engineers for roles at the Neville Hill TrainCare Centre in Leeds, where the starting salary is £49,879. Northern’s engineers work around the clock to ensure trains are well-maintained and ready to meet the demands of daily service.
Tricia Williams, managing director at Northern, commented: "We are recruiting talented engineers who can help us keep our fleet of trains running smoothly all year round for tens of millions of passengers. We’re looking for individuals who can solve problems and perform maintenance and repairs in a fast-paced environment, while adhering to strict safety regulations and working effectively as part of a team."
Applicants must be over 18 and hold a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 in Engineering. They also need to live within a 45-minute drive of the depot they wish to work at.
In addition to qualified engineers, Northern is encouraging women and ex-military personnel to apply for these roles. Rebecca Prendergast, senior production manager at Newton Heath, previously urged women to consider a career in engineering, describing it as an "incredibly rewarding" field. She emphasized that women shouldn’t wait for external encouragement to enter the profession.
Northern also welcomes applications from those with military engineering experience. The company has a history of employing veterans and current reservists, offering them the opportunity to apply their skills in a structured and supportive environment. In 2021, Northern signed the Armed Forces Covenant, a pledge to support the employment of veterans and recognise military qualifications within the business.
