Police Issue Update After UWE Bristol Student Fatally Stabbed in Worcester
Wednesday, December 3, 2025
West Mercia Police have issued an update following the fatal stabbing of a University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) student in Worcester, after several suspects arrested on suspicion of murder were released on bail while enquiries continue.
The victim, 30-year-old Vijay Kumar Sheoran from Haryana, India, was studying at UWE Bristol and had travelled to the UK earlier this year to continue his education. He was found with serious stab wounds on Barbourne Road, Worcester, in the early hours of 25 November. Despite emergency treatment, he died later that day in hospital.
Police confirmed that five men aged between 22 and 35 were arrested shortly after the incident. They were initially detained on suspicion of attempted murder before the investigation was upgraded to a murder inquiry. All five have now been released on conditional bail as detectives continue to collect evidence, analyse CCTV and speak to witnesses. A sixth man arrested during the early stage of the investigation has been released with no further action.
In a statement, West Mercia Police reassured local communities and the student population that the increased police presence in the area relates to ongoing investigative work and that there is no wider risk to the public. Officers are continuing to appeal for information, particularly from anyone who may have been in the Barbourne Road area on the night of the incident or who may have relevant dashcam or doorbell footage.
News of Vijay’s death has shocked students at UWE Bristol and prompted tributes from classmates, staff and members of the Indian student community. In his home village in Haryana, family members have spoken about their devastation and have called for a full and transparent investigation. Indian officials and local representatives have also sought support from the Indian government to assist the family and to closely monitor the progress of the case.
The incident has reignited conversations about international student safety across UK campuses. While police have stressed that this appears to be an isolated incident, student organisations say it highlights the importance of accessible support services, mental-health resources and clear communication between universities and their international students following serious incidents.
West Mercia Police say the investigation remains active, and officers continue to encourage anyone with information or footage to come forward directly or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
