Head of Department – Law

Job Description

Staffordshire University is on a journey to become the foremost modern higher education institution in the UK, with an international reputation for excellence, and we are looking for inspirational and effective people to take us to the next stage.

In 2018 we broke in to the World University rankings for the first time and were named as a top 50 UK university by the Guardian. The quality of our student experience has placed us in the top 10 for teaching quality in the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018 and 2019 and we are on track to achieve a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Many of our students come from areas with low rates of participation in higher education and we continually strive to ensure the courses we offer meet the needs of people and employers. We are expanding our non-traditional, flexible study options, particularly in apprenticeships serving the public sector.

You can join us at a time when we begin the next step of our transformation journey. The new £40m Catalyst Building will deliver 6,500 new apprentices in the next decade, boosting both the local and national economy. The development of our offer to new academic areas and geographic locations will see us expand our reach and make an innovative offer to a new generation of students.

We are a university of and for our community: local, national and global. If you share our values and have the skills to deliver our vision, we want to hear from you.

We are currently recruiting a Head of Department to lead and manage the Law department within the School of Law, Policing and Forensics.  It is an exciting time in legal education, with changes to professional body regulations and digital technology revolutionising the way in which law is practiced.  We are committed to ensuring that our courses and research are at the cutting edge and are seeking someone who shares our vision.

Reporting to the Dean of the School, you will be responsible for the overall co-ordination, leadership, management and development of academic staff in the department of Law. You will also provide academic leadership including evaluation and development of the portfolio of awards, ensuring the interrelationship and requirements of accrediting and professional bodies are maintained.

Educated to post-graduate level, and ideally PhD level, you will have previous experience of leadership in an academic context with significant experience of award management, and quality assurance processes. You will be an excellent communicator with the ability to engage and influence at all levels, along with the ability to think strategically and identify sound business opportunities.
